Aging—— An Unprecedented Challenge

In the next 40 years, China is facing up to an unprecedented problem —-the aging population is expanding rapidly and intensively. The aging population presents a big challenge to China’s economic and social development. This trend will likely greatly affect national economic development, political stability and people’s livelihood. This demographic phenomenon is occurring whilst China is still in the process of development. China is not well-equipped to deal effectively with the rapid aging of its population, given the status of its post-modern, dual urban-rural economic development structure.

The Necessity of Interdisciplinary Study on Aging Issue

In order to deal successfully with the aging of China’s population, a new supply chain coordinating a variety of economic activities will emerge, including manufacturing, operating and service industries. The new supply chain will require integration of all sectors of industry, bridging academic theory and practice.  It is not sufficient to look at this problem from the perspective of a single discipline; doing so will impair the effectiveness of an integrated, national policy to accomplish a working solution to this challenge.

NIIA—An Innovative Interdisciplinary Institute

NIIA is studying the aging problem from the perspective of extended life span and its related relationships. It studies how to help the aged enjoy a longer life of high quality and dignity. At the same time, it is trying to improve the seniors’ life quality and contribution within a harmonious and sustainable society.
